Annual Renewal

LPN Registration Expires March 31

If you are an LPN, your registration and authorization to practice expires each year on March 31st at midnight.  If you wish to continue to practice in Prince Edward Island after that date, you must renew your registration. For the lowest renewal fee, your renewal application must be completed and approved by March 1 at midnight. For the best access to support, and for the opportunity to submit any required information missing from your application before late fees apply, you are strongly encouraged to complete your renewal application as early as possible when the renewal window opens.

A complete renewal application package includes all of the following:

  • An accurate and complete renewal form, submitted using the CLPNPEI online registration portal
  • Full payment of all applicable fees.
  • Full payment of any outstanding amounts owed to the CLPNPEI.
  • Any additional information the Registrar may require to confirm your suitability and eligibility to practice as a member of the profession. Applicants required to provide additional information will be advised directly by the CLPNPEI.

The CLPNPEI Registration Renewal Application has additional questions and new menu selections added to the Employment Section, to gain additional information about the nursing workforce. This information is collected by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) in a statistical and non-identifying manner. It will be used provincially and nationally to support planning, management, and evaluation of nursing resources. The CIHI Resource Document has been created to provide more information for members renewing their registration.

Once your complete application package is received, it will be assessed against the criteria for registration before your registration renewal is approved.  Your application must be approved by midnight on March 1 to avoid late fees. Be sure to submit your application early, leaving you time to correct errors or deficiencies in your application before the deadline.

Renewal Notices

Renewal notices will be sent out by email to all active practicing LPNs in January, with information about renewing registration for the upcoming registration year.

After the March 1 Deadline

Registrants who complete their registration renewal application package between March 2 and March 31st at midnight will pay a Late Penalty Fee fee of $100. Registrants who do not complete their renewal application package by March 31st at midnight will no longer be authorized to practice. On April 1st, your registration will be in default and you will be required to pay the Reinstatement of Certificate of Registration Fee $650 which includes a $200 reinstatement fee + $450 Certificate of Registration Fee. You will also need to provide a current criminal record check with the vulnerable sector check before returning to practice.

Note that your current year’s registration authorizes practice up to and including March 31st. If your registration is in default or cancelled after that date, you cannot practice. Unauthorized practice is subject to an Unauthorized Practice Penalty Fee of $500.

Re-entering the LPN Profession

If you are a former Prince Edward Island Licensed Practical Nurse and wish to return to practical nursing in Prince Edward Island, you must first apply to have your eligibility for reinstatement assessed.

A reinstatement assessment is used by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Prince Edward Island to determine whether the length of time you have been away from your practice could impact your readiness to provide safe and competent nursing care.

Please login to the Member Portal to access the Reinstatement Application Form. You will be required to request a verification of your registration from all jurisdictions where you have been registered/licensed while your registration with CLPNPEI has lapsed.

You will also be required to provide verification of your practice hours to ensure you meet the legislative currency requirement.

For further information on re- entering practice, please contact the CLPNPEI by email at info@clpnpei.ca  or by phone at 902-566-1512.
