Speaker Information:

Lauran Cutler, Risk Control Consulting Director at CNA. She provides consulting services for Aging Services, Hospitals, Life Sciences and Allied Healthcare Provider insureds in the United States and Canada. She works directly with insureds on resident and patient safety, and develops publications, tools and other resources to help our insureds manage risk. Lauran is a registered nurse and Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management. She brings an extensive clinical nursing background, which includes experience in emergency room, burn unit, open heart and surgical intensive care nursing and healthcare administration

Theresa Hartley Theresa Hartley is a Partner at McCague Borlack LLP.  She received her Bachelor of Arts (Hons.), graduating with high distinction, in 1999 from the University of Toronto.  She obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2002.  Theresa was called to the Ontario Bar in Fall, 2003.  Theresa has experience in professional liability matters and is on the preferred counsel list for LawPRO.  As part of her professional liability practice, Theresa has represented various healthcare professionals in both liability and disciplinary matters.  Theresa has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and before various tribunals.  Theresa also has experience in various alternative dispute resolution processes, including arbitrations and mediations.

Brian Murphy is a Partner at McCague Borlack LLP in Kitchener, Ontario.  Brian graduated from Ludlow Hall, University of New Brunswick, Canada in 2000 with a Bachelor of Laws Degree. He obtained a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2003. Prior to his legal studies Brian had obtained an MD and worked for 15 years as a physician in private and hospital practice, including emergency & community practice. During that time he was called to testify as an independent treating witness and/or expert witness in court and tribunal matters relating to social, trauma, and sexual assault matters. Brian’s practice includes civil litigation, personal injury law, professional liability, medical malpractice consultation and coverage related matters. Brian has experience in alternative dispute resolution processes including mediations, arbitrations and lawyer-to-lawyer discussion.

She served as the administrator for nine physician neurology group practice and was the chief operating officer for a large outpatient medical/surgical clinic. She was the Assistant Vice President of Risk Management and Insurance Services at Winthrop University Hospital.

 

Lauran received her nursing degree from Eastern Kentucky University. She is a Six Sigma Green Belt, TeamSTEPPS™ Master Trainer, and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).

This course will explore various aspects of dementia using the principles of Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) as a foundation. Students will explore various aspects of care for persons living with dementia and the importance of the caregiver’s self-care within the multidisciplinary team.
